Looking for a distraction I go on Facebook this morning with status updates of joy and great comings and hopes for 2013 for pretty much every status. I get to start the new year 9 hours in watching my beautiful horse die in front of my eyes. Happy freaking new year......
Backing up less than 24 hours
At just before 11am December 31st my dad calls says Fancy is down and had been for a while the way she was covered in mud and just lying there. He gets her up and comes in to call me. We decided to have him bring her over from the back pasture to the barn. I rush and get Naomi and myself dressed in record time. I was just changing Paige as he calls again she fell and wont get up. EFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. I made there in record time, threw the girls at my mom, threw on rubber boots and most literally ran out to her. She was down, shivering a bit, breathing heavy. we tried to get her up and she wouldn't. called the vet who had just gone to lunch but was going to call me back asap. She nosed her stomach, ok so were probably dealing with colic (a blockage in the intestine or worse case her intestine got twisted around its self) My dad and I kept trying and finally after a solid hour down she got up. We immediately walked her to the barn and she was doing ok. I kept her walking assuming colic and not wanting her to go down. Vet called me and said he could be there in an hour and a half. Miss F was getting done walking so we went backwards. We went in tight circles we did everything to keep her up. It was getting almost impossible and the vet showed up! Hallelujah!!! Gave her some pain meds and a sedative. Listened to her heart rate, gut, flushed water and some oil in her and did a rectal exam all leading to twisted gut. He left me with a pain killer and a sedative said to call and if he didn't hear from me he'd call when his shift was over at 8. We crossed our fingers for a miracle and said good bye. She stayed up and when he called right at 8 he said give her the pain meds before I go to bed and see what shes like in the morning. I didn't know what to hope for. Since it happened once she can colic again and that is just no fun especially when I don't live there and have the 2 girls. Maybe it would be better to... Nope just go with the flow. Don't say or think anything and let her tell us what to do. Went down and gave them around 1045, she looked tired, she was shaking, unsteady on her feet, blood shot eyes and cringing at my slightest touch. Say it with me now, EFFFFFFFFFF.......
Woke up January 1st 2013 She was still up, Keith and my dad very optimistic only because she was up. She was shaking, distressed and you could see the dozen times she had been rolling that night. She was pacing pacing because standing she was too unsteady, she was in pain and she was rolling a lot with paper white gums and tounge. I ran up got the other pain med/sedative for her and my phone. Gave the drugs and was leaving a message for our vet when the sedative, which should still allow her to stand, took affect and she literally fell to the ground. She then started to have a seizure with me DESPERATELY trying to get a hold of a vet to come put her down but as I finally got a hold of one, not mine but his partner at the clinic, she was gone, right before my eyes. After 15 years she was gone at 22 years old. She is great. She waited for me, just like my perfect J did.
So yes my favorite holiday is tainted, 2012 ended crappy and 2013 started even worse.
What's ironic is as I'm leaving the Of Monsters and Men song Mountain Sound came on and these are the lyrics: Hold your horses now/ We sleep until the sun goes down/ Through the woods we ran/ Deep into the mountain sound
